Is there a condition characterized by an aversion to seed-bearing fruits?

This sounds weird to everyone who hears it but I truly have an aversion to certain fruits that have a large amount of seeds in them. If I open a fruit like a honeydew melon, I get lightheaded when I see the seeds inside. There's something about the way they look that is sooooo gross. I've only done that once and was so digusted that I refuse to buy another whole one. I only buy the ones that are already cut up and I only buy seedless watermelon ;however, strawberries pose no threat. I have no problem with eating the fruit, only with cutting them open. I would like to start eating pomegranates for the healthy benefits they provide but I don't think I can deal with cutting them open and seeing all the seeds inside. Even though this may sound crazy, I am dead serious! Only serious replies please.

I can totally relate. I used to be the same way. Cutting open a cantelope used to be really gross to me. Now, while it's not a piece of cake, it's much easier.

I used to be the same way about handling raw meat as well. I remember the first time I made meatloaf. I gagged several times as I was mushing the meat together with raw eggs and other ingredients.....EWWWWW!

I overcame it by repetitively handling these foods. It took me a couple of years of making myself do it, and it became easier each time. The way I'd talk myself into it is to remember that my hands are always washable, and no matter how gross I think whatever it is may be, I can still wash my hands of it, and be clean again.

By the way, it's years upon years later now, and I still make a yucky face when I'm scooping out the insides of a cantelope. How funny, come to think of it!

By the way, pomegranate seeds never grossed me out, they're completely dry unless you break open the seed, and it's not slimy. The strange thing was that the whitish membranes that hold the seeds in place in the pomegranate was kind of weird and a little gross to me. Something about the texture and color of it turned me off, but now it doesn't bother me much.
Reply:There are phobias about everything, for instance "anthophobia," a fear of flowers. Some people have a fear of pumpkins, etc. If you were to open a seed packet would that freak you out? Most of the time you can conquer your fear by facing it again and again. Force yourself to cut into and handle all different kinds of fruits (with seeds) and anything else that holds seeds. Maybe you can condition yourself visually and eventually get over it....
Reply:I have a cousin with the same condition as you. She freaks out when she sees a whole bunch of seeds whether in the fruit or outside. Which is why she wouldn't eat an orange that is not cut. Coz she wouldn't want the chance of coming face to face with a seed somewhere in the orange. I thought she's joking initially but i am convinced she's seriously scared. So don't worry, you are not alone in this world. Hope this is some consolation to you.
Reply:I've never heard of this but I know it is possible to have an unreasonable fear (phobia) of anything. It is also possible to overcome these with determination and help
