Reception tables?

what can you fill vases with to give the table more depth and color. We are not allowed to use sand or gravel but we have been thinking of using fruit such as cranberries, apples, pomegranates, sliced limes, etc. Has anyone done this? do the pomegranates stay fresh? Any websites with pics would be helpful...or any suggestions of what else you can fill vases with. its a fall wedding. thanks!!! xoxo

Reception tables?
Pomegranates are expensive (at least where I live). I think apples, whole lemons or limes would be best, depending upon your color scheme.

Reply:We're putting fruit in vases, filling them with water, then floating a candle on top (we're also using a mirror runner and some ivy and votive candles). We're using cylindrical vases, so there isn't a lot of room. We're using small Key limes, small lemons, Bing cherries and such. We also tried layering beans in various pretty colors (black beans, speckled cranberry beans, white beans--there are lots of pretty beans available and they're dirt cheap). It had the effect of small gravel. That might work with the pomegranates if you used just the seeds.
Reply:I saw this really cool one the other day with beans in it:

Also depending on your colours consider using coffee beans.

Also consider the cost of the fruit you are going to choose, apples are larger and cheaper than having enough cranberries to fill the same sized vase...
Reply:A good point was made about pomegranates. Cranberries are too small to make an impact as a centrepiece.

If I were you I would do apples in a low, galvanized tin or wood basket. Thats perfect for fall.

Lemons or limes would work well in a clear glass vase, but I would leave them uncut and use a lot for impact. This would be a fresh centrepiece for a summer wedding.
Reply:Pomegranates are big and kind of weird looking unsliced and sliced they are the most messy thing imaginable! I think cranberries and apples would be beautiful!

Good luck!
Reply:i went to a wedding where they used fish they went to the flea market and bought gold fish by the dozen and put them as the centerpiece with fake flowers floating on top it looked so COOL!
Reply:Fill them with your colours of jelly bellys
Reply:how about marbles, water and goldfish? have the guests take them home as pets
Reply:We are doing cranberries since we are getting married right before Thanksgiving.

We are ordering the flowers wholesale and we got large drinking glasses at Ikea for 20 cents a piece. We also got smaller juice glasses for 10 cents a piece that we are going to put in between the three vases per table with cranberries and a votive in the center.
