I am doing a powerpoint and i just need one more slide on how he influenced the mortal world.
Can you please help me.
I have an example on Persephone.
Persphone had eaten a few pomegranate seeds, so she would have to return to the Underworld for as many months as the sees she had eaten. This explains the seasons.
Persephone is in the Underworld in the winter time.
Can you please help me?
Can i get alittle help on the God Zeus?
Zeus would yell and hurl lightning at people he didn't like or wanted to punish. People used this as an explanation for thunder and lightning during a rain storm. Much like mothers tell their children today that God is bowling to make them less afraid of thunder and lightning during a storm. The thunder was Zeus' booming voice raised in anger, the lightning was the result of his wrath.
One of the symbols of Zeus is the thunderbolt. He was not only the supreme ruler of Olympus, he was also the god of rain, wind, thunder and lightning. These attributes point to his humble beginnings as a minor storm god (son of the Titan Chronos) before his rise to power as King of the Olympians.
Interestingly enough, people who were struck by lightning and survived were considered blessed by the gods.
**NOTE: I do like Stephen Y's answer below me concerning Zeus being adopted as Jupiter by the Romans and I think you should keep it in mind. The only problem with that answer is then we are talking about the Romans and Jupiter (who was tweaked by the Romans, like all the Greek Gods were, and thus became slightly different from Zeus) not the Greek Zeus. Jupiter is Zeus after a couple centuries. Think of it like whisper down the lane. What you start out with is never what you end up with. The Greek Zeus, however, was contributing to the masses' perception of weather long before Jupiter ever came onto the scene.
Reply:You know, I took a class in Mythology in college but that was, like, forty years ago. I'm sorry but I don't remember a whole lot.
The best thing to do is enter "Zeus" into your browser and you will come up with hundreds of references that will give you everything you could ever possibly want to know about him.
What more could you ask for?
Reply:Zeus, obviously is the king of the gods in the greek pantheon. worshipped by rulers and laid claim to all things of the universe. Because he was worshipped by rulers and kings it might be possible to associate politics with him as one of his realms of influence. With that said the perfect embodiment of Zeus would be President Clinton, although he had power and presidency, he'd sleep with anything to get the thrill. Apparently it was socially acceptable when Clintin did it too.
Zeus' influence in the modern world is quite an easy thing to see. As humans had a king, so did the gods. They might both not have been elected their position but they were both respected of where they fell in the status of the hierarchy.
Reply:The Romans adopted the Greek pantheon wholesale giving them Romanized names. Zeus became Jupiter from which the planet takes its name. Oaths were taken by Jupiter Hospitalus and a violation of such an oath was punishable as treason to Rome.
Reply:He impregenated a bunch of women. One of the women bore Hercules(sp?) That's basically all I know. You can look him up if you want.
